5 7 2010Folklorists prepare their folk costumes, wine makers keep an eye on their vineyards and musicians practise hard. Everything must be prepared for the Pálava wine harvest festival which takes place in Mikulov from 10 to 12 September. The king himself will come to check this year’s harvest.
This variety of red wine is harvested later at the time of wine harvest. Rubinet, originally called Tintet is a cross of Revolta, Alibernet and André grapes.
The vines grow abundantly and are of an upright growth with sparsely leaved branches. The leaves are shiny and of a pentagonal shape. The bunches of grapes are of a medium size and thickly branched. The actual grape is small to medium in size, elliptical with dark blue almost black skin. The pulp and juice are of a strong colour. Rubinet makes the grapes go darker quite early in the season but the grapes are left on the vines till mid October to lose their acidity.

18 9 2009The celebration of wine harvest comes to Moravia with first Burčák (young, slightly fermented wine). The wine harvest of Pálava is one of the most famous ones. The people of Mikulov celebrate their rich harvest from their vineyards, the arrival of autumn but also the 600 year-old-tradition.
People had their first celebration in the square as far back as in 1403 when the lord of Mikulov, John of Lichtenstein, liberated the Czech king Wenceslas IV, the son of king Charles IV from his captivity in Vienna. The arrival of the king was then boisterously celebrated. And it is still celebrated today. The wine harvest of Pálava stands for three days of Burčák, wine, singing and happy crowds.

1 9 2009St. Martin, arriving on a white horse and 11 November are symbolical not just for its first snow but in present days mainly for its first glass of St. Martin’s wine. Moravian and Czech wine makers have continued with the old tradition of paying labourers and extending their work contracts. Doing so they very successfully managed to crush the offensive of French wine makers and their Beaujolais. And why on 11th? It is apparently the same crazy number as is the young wine.
St. Martin’s wine is only permitted to be made of designated types of Valtelina Early Red and Müller Thurgau grapes for white wines and St. Laurent’s and Blue Portugal grapes for rose and red wines. And those who want to be certified to sell these wines must comply with strict quality criteria, controlled by the Viticulture Committee of the Czech Republic.

1 9 2009Is there anything that is specific and exceptional for the region of South Moravia? Of course there is. It is Burčák (young, slightly fermented wine). Only here, except of Moravian Austrian border region in Austria, people enjoy this drink, which is an intermediate product during wine production. It is a drink which is slightly cloudy, of sweeter taste and strong flavour, resembling particular grape type with alcohol contents from one to seven percent. Burčák is most commonly made of white wine grapes but it also tastes excellent when made of red wine varieties.
