The dream of designer Daniel Piršč came true in Mikulov. He chose this South Moravian town over Prague where he had lived for almost two decades and in 2005 he opened his own registered studio called Studio Pirsc Porcelain. Art manufacturing was born in poetic surroundings of a ceremonial hall at the Mikulov Jewish cemetery. It is here where unique pieces of art are created which are an interesting alternative to porcelain mass production.
The Filigrán Vase has already become a legend of Czech design. It is possibly the most known work of Daniel Piršč that has its special charm and is interesting for the technique that was used to make it. The author describes a complicated process of creating this interesting vase: “After creating a cast and letting it dry out, delicate pattern is then engraved by hand into its body. As it is so easy to crack or break, each piece is an original with many hours of focused work going into it.
Daniel Piršč weighs out the delicacy of the used material by applying chunky motifs. He gives porcelain a shape of a mine, a torpedo or a cross. Even the delicate “filigran” lace motif is engraved onto a skull. But his main focus is the functionality of each piece. A miniature mine can be used as an egg cup, a dispenser in a shape of the legendary Zeppelin airship can be used as a saltcellar or a pepper pot, cups and saucers with a skull and cross bones called “Maryša” await their hot coffee and a porcelain torpedo also serves as a wine stopper.
The designer of Mikulov tries to discover the use for porcelain even in places where we might not expect it. He finds it by using 3D wallpapers. Plastic porcelain features are completely new in interior design. Daniel Piršč gives 3D wallpapers the form of raindrops, effective crosses, airplane models and even of raindrops splashing. Gradually, he incorporates three other motifs – birds, ovals and rose blossoms.
The Pirsc Porcelain Studio uses technologically unusual methods to create all the products. Before fine ceramics, whose components include feldspar, kaolin and quartz, are made into a designer gem, each product goes through several modifications while it is truly pampered. “The idea stands at the beginning of everything. After that comes the drawing and visualization, but nothing will say more about the actual product shape than the clay model”, Daniel Piršč describes the first stages of his work. Then there are hours spent in the studio when working with the form, material, drying, burning and glazing. It is only at the end of this long production process when the Mikulov studio products acquire certificates of originality that prove their authenticity and originality.
Unique pieces that are adorned with snowy white, golden or platinum patterns are already being presented at designer exhibitions in Paris, Moscow and London this year. For October Designerblock in Prague, Daniel Piršč has prepared a premiere of his work “Shadow” – extremely thin vases in the shape of a cross or a cactus whose balance is evened out by its own porcelain shadow.
