20 9 2009Climate, environmental and soil habitat of Southern Moravia are close to those of the nearby Uhry region that is famous for the breeding of horses. However, not many large stud farms have been established in this area. Horses were bred here at most aristocratic mansions which is proved today by the presence of opulent chateau stables. The aristocracy bred horses for their own needs, they rode them and used them for carriages. In breeding they preferred fine types of horses with a higher share of an Arabic horse and later on of an English Thoroughbred if it was not a Thoroughbred itself. The idea of breeding other powerful warm-blooded horses on these mostly sandy soils, with dry, slightly windy climate and with a low density vegetation, defeated the object of horse breeding with the exception of the chateau stud farm in Kopčany, founded by the empress Maria Theresa in 1765. But even here the breeding of a powerful horse, the Horse of Kladruby in this case, arrived accidentally. A riding horse of an “eastern character” was then bred at this stud farm, which was situated, according to the arrangement of Austro-Hungarian Empire, in the area of Uhry (certain parts of today’s Slovakia and Hungary). During Austrian wars with the Prussian king Frederic II, a more substantial part of Kladruby stud farm moved to Kopčany. It was moved to a less threatened part of the monarchy and it was not doing bad at all. The Kladruby horses became more of a drier shape, without the obvious lymphatic traits, also their constitution improved. The contribution of breeding this type of horse in Kopčany lay in “territorial isolation” – genetic terminology of breeding in different conditions. The Generale breed, which is one of the primary groups of the Kladruby horse, originated in Kopčany.
In the terrestrial breeding of horses in Moravia, a lighter, fine type of horse was more common. Horses were, and are still today, used for lighter work of pulling character, mainly in vineyards. The Slovácko region is renowned for its typical outlook of horse breeding with white being the most represented colour. The White horse has always been the most desired horse. There were times when at stud breeding stations the White horse had to be present. If it had not been a Thoroughbred with Arabic ancestry, being very close to white colour, it would have been a white Old Kladruby stud.
The traditional “Riding of the Kings”, the largest folklorist picture of Moravian Slovakia also depicts horses. A cold-blooded horse appears in pictures, dedicated to this theme, by Jožka Úprka. It is a horse of a different breed – Czech-Moravian Belgian horse – whose breeding attained its largest country base in Southern Moravia. From the breeders’ point of view, the growth of cold-blooded horse breeding has its roots in the Slovácko region. During its time of growing need for stronger horses for agriculture purposes, particular breeders did not want to give up on their lighter warm-blooded horses. That is why they enabled the breeding of cold-blooded, calm and stockier types.
World reputation in the breeding of warm-blooded English stud horses was achieved by the Napajedla stud farm that is situated on the border of Haná and Slovácko regions. The stud farm was founded on manor grounds of Frederic Stokau in 1886 by famous sportsperson Aristid Baltazzi. This stud farm has affected the breeding of horses in the whole country by its standards and influence and Southern Moravia was not the only exception. Many breeding farms of English Thoroughbred horses were founded here. Racehorse stables then became part of this breeding process. Šinkvice farm, part of Těšany, has become the most reputable. The breeding of horses and racing stables here were run as a part of the cooperative farm Židlochovice. A big name, not only for this establishment breeding English Thoroughbreds with training race grounds, but also for the Velká Pardubická steeplechase, was the three times winner of this most difficult race on the continent, a Red horse called Korok, ridden by Václav Chaloupek that raced in the colours of the cooperative farm of Židlochovice.
